Spinal Cord Stimulation

Chronic spine pain can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, making it difficult to carry out everyday tasks and leading to emotional distress. Despite the availability of various treatment options, many patients continue to experience pain that cannot be adequately managed by medication or other non-invasive approaches.

In such cases, Spinal Cord Stimulation can be an effective solution. It involves using a small device called a spinal cord stimulator implanted under the skin to deliver electrical impulses to the spinal cord. These impulses interfere with the pain signals that travel from the nerves to the brain, reducing pain perception.

Spinal Cord Stimulation is an effective and safe treatment option for chronic pain, with a success rate of up to 80%. It is particularly useful for patients with failed back surgery syndrome, neuropathic pain, and complex regional pain syndrome.

What is a spinal cord stimulator?

It is a tiny device inserted beneath the skin and stimulates the spinal nerve with electric currents or pulses. The device’s key components are pulse generators, a remote control to adjust the pulse from the generator, and a wire to deliver that pulse to the nerves.

When the device is turned on, the SCS stimulates the nerves in the painful region to block the pain-causing signals from reaching the brain. A portable remote operates generators and changes the pulse as necessary. The batteries inside the turbines can either be recharged or not.

Pre-op

The doctor will perform some preoperative tests and inquire about your medical background. You are not permitted to take NSAIDS, Coumadin, or any other blood thinners two weeks before the procedure. Before surgery, you must cease smoking, chewing, and drinking. You cannot consume food or drink even the night before the procedure.

Post-op

The recovery area will receive you. You will have your pain, blood pressure, etc., checked. You will be permitted to return home on the same day or the following morning. After thoroughly inspecting the generator, the team will release you by providing directions.
